THE 2007 TEAM TAKES SHAPE

IAIN WARDLAW

IAN NICHOLSON
With experienced ex Durham and Lancashire all-rounder John Wood still at the helm, the club has put together an exciting team of players for the coming season.

Although the Club have lost two key men from last year's team in openers Adam Patel who has joined Harrogate and Mark Gill who has moved just down the road to Brighouse we have found very capable replacements. Exciting opening batsman "Zuby" Raje has moved in the opposite direction to Mark, joining us from Brighouse. "Mally" Nicholson has joined his brother Ian from Bankfoot and will fill our other opening spot.

Pakistan overseas man Khurram Shehzad, who returned early last term with a back injury, has left us and will not be playing in the Bradford League this season, but we have replaced him with fellow countryman 24-year old Mohammad Zaman (Acquired for the club by the "Rehman Professional Sports Agency") who like Khurram plays with Faisalabad. A right handed batsman, and off-spin bowler, Zaman will be playing his sixth season in the UK, spending 2005 and 2006 as Littleborough's professional in the Central Lancashire League, and prior to this turned out with Driffield in the Yorkshire Premier League scoring 1157 runs and taking 40 wickets. Last season he scored 987 runs, but he completed 1000 runs in each of his previous five seasons. His first two seasons in England were spent with Brandesburton in the NPI East Yorkshire Cricket Alliance League where his run tallies were 1421 and 1317; and between scoring 2738 runs managed to capture 138 wickets. He is indeed a "class act", and we are hoping that he will continue his run spree with us.

Our other capture is promising fast bowler Iain Wardlaw from neighbours Hartshead Moor. Last year he took 40 wickets at 22.60 runs each. He makes up a quartet of Cleckheaton players who, last season, represented the Bradford League in the White Rose Competition. Iain together with Mally & Ian Nicholson, Craig Wiseman, and Tom Pringle played in the final at Guiseley in which, unfortunately they were defeated. Also added to the squad is former Cleckheaton junior Sam Wilson who will play when work commitments allow.

Skipper John Wood, his brother Ian, and Craig Thornton provide some much needed experience to a side full of talented youngsters. The hope is that a further experienced batsman can be added to the squad before the start of the season giving the side a look of quality. The hope is that this side will be the nucleus of a successful team for many years to come.

JUNIOR & SENIOR PRIZE PRESENTATION

Our Presentation Evening took place on Friday, 5th October 2007 in front of an enthusiastic audience of over 100 juniors and parents, plus of course most of our 1st and 2nd team players.

JCT600 Bradford Cricket League PR & Marketing Officer, Alan Birkinshaw presented the prizes including memento's to all under 11's players. He was very complementary to the club, particularly regarding its junior cricket policy encouraging our young cricketers to stay with a club that would give them every possible chance of progressing to senior level. He also congratulated the Club on its achievement in staging the Thompson Davis "Super-Twenty" Floodlit Trophy which had proved to be such a success.

.
BRADFORD CRICKET LEAGUE DINNER
.
At the Bradford League Presentation Dinner the Club's players picked up the impressive array of six trophies.

Chief recipient was keeper Mally Nicholson who collected an unprecedented fourth award, the "Young Player of the Year Trophy" to add to three he'd already collected for his wicket keeping prowess. Before this, team mate Tom Pringle had picked up the "Young Spinner of the Year Trophy"

Stalwart 2nd team batsman Chris Dobson had earlier received the 2nd Team Batting Average Trophy which was a fitting finale for the 2nd team's season which under the leadership of Neil Shackleton had become 2nd Team 2nd Division Champions in gaining promotion to the 1st Division.

THE THOMPSON, DAVIS
"SUPER-TWENTY" FLOODLIT TROPHY
held on 4th, 5th & 6th SEPTEMBER 2007

After running successful 20/twenty competitions in 2005 and 2006, held on a Sunday on both occassions, Cleckheaton decided, provided the necessary sponsorship was forthcoming, to hold a floodlit competition in 2007, but it was not until around July that everything fell into place.

With the support of Morley chairman Graham Smith, his club entered into a joint venture agreement with us which saw the formation of a "Ton Up" club whose members put in 100 sponsorship each for places at a Celebration Dinner which was now to take place the evening after the trophy final.

Finally a sponsor was found for the event in John Wildman, managing director of local storage and distribution company Thompson, Davis & Co Ltd, and then David Gilbank of D G Electrical stepped in with an offer to provide floodlighting at no little cost to himself. An so the Thompson, Davis & Co. Ltd "Super-Twenty" was up and running.

Arrangements are already in progress for a repeat of this season's success. It promises to be even better next season with the availablity of better floodlight, and hopefully more competitive cricket.

THE UMPIRES
David Ellis, Paul Wiseman, David Sharp, Glyn Pearson.

Running in conjunction with the main tournament was the "SURRIDGE TROPHY" an under 9's competition. The combatants the Cleckheaton Wildcats, the Gomersal Bears, the Cleckheaton Whitesox, and the Morley Meerkats played their games before the main games and provided fine entertainment for those attending.

The final was won the by Gomersal Bears who defeated the Cleckheaton Wildcats, but all teams deserve a hand of applause for the entertainment they provided over the three evenings.
